My first full wedding shooting video only

When I first started as a photographer in 2010 I was afraid of letting anyone know that I was only just a beginner. I was terrified at the thought that my couples wouldn't be able to have confidence in what I was doing. Now that I have the benefit of hindsight, this was a mistake. I placed too much pressure on myself to perform at a level far beyond my abilities and so what happened was that I was riddled with anxiety going into every wedding day.

At the start of learning wedding videography, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't repeat this mistake and so I have been honest with all of my couples of where I'm at in my journey. The benefit I have as a new filmmaker is that I have ten years of experience shooting weddings and so the growth I have seen has been fast-paced. The things I had no idea about weren't so much about the wedding days themselves or the interactions with people, it was more on the technical side which can be done away from the pressure of a wedding day.

It only took a few weddings to realise what sort of gear I wanted and so I went and made that happen. I was priced low at the beginning so that I could learn to edit while still being able to keep the lights on.

This brings me to a point in time, December 2021, where I found myself booked as just the wedding videographer and not having to take photos at the same time. This was a first and there's a new word that I've adopted to help explain how I felt. Nercited! Nervous but excited. I like that word because being nervous can have a negative tone to it whereas excited is generally upbeat and positive.

So here goes, this is Anne and Ryan's teaser film from their wedding at Yarra Valley Estate. Their full film is in production so there will be an update to this blog post in the coming weeks.
