Matt Elliott

Wedding Photographer & Videographer

Hey, I'm Matt and I live in Mornington, Victoria in a blended family of 6 Humans and 2 cats. My partner, Sian and I have 4 boys between us. Cam, Josh, Finley and Jim ranging in ages between 9 and 19. Our 2 cats, Daphne and Kevin have successfully blended too.

I'm a lover of stories and getting to the nitty gritty of life. I ask a lot of questions (in part to deflect having to talk about myself) but mainly because connecting with people through their story has come naturally to me. I’m keen to learn where people have come from and the path they've taken to get to this point in their lives.

I grew up on Sydney's Northern Beaches and moved to Melbourne in 2003. I learnt the trade in the film days from my Dad who had a long career as a professional sports photographer. I then worked as a graphic designer before turning my attention back to photography in 2010.

When I got back into photography I really wasn't sure what I would do and if it would even be as a professional. All I knew was that it just felt right. I took stacks of landscapes in and around Melbourne and bugged the family to take their photo any chance I could. I got in touch with some music magazines and managed to score a few unpaid gigs shooting live music and festivals.

In 2010, the typical story happened when a school mate asked me to shoot his wedding.

It proved to be a massive turning point because I almost instantly decided to pursue a career as a professional wedding photographer. Nothing happens quickly and while I had my other business paying the bills, I worked on my wedding business. Eventually, weddings took off and I stepped aside from my other business.

There have been many ups and a few downs along the way just like any business or job and my 'why' has changed as I've matured. What started as a side hustle to bring in some extra money has grown into a full time business with a focus on serving couples who might have a reluctance to be in front of a camera.

in 2012, I was accredited as a professional photographer by the AIPP and I've now photographed almost 600 weddings. I've been featured both nationally and internationally in print magazines and online wedding blogs like Polka Dot Bride, White Magazine, Together Journal and PureWow. I was also very humbled to be asked to shoot the cover of a prominent wedding magazine in 2015. It was an intimidating experience but I was really pleased with the result.

I've developed my own journalistic style to document a wedding day. It's a fly on the wall approach with only a small amount of help with the dreaded 'posing' just so that you're comfortable, natural and feeling confident. I've always struggled having my photo taken so I know how it feels to have a big camera in your face. I concentrate on creating a relaxed environment for all of us so that it's a painless process.

Seeing people's interest in what I do is really cool, it's a non-traditional way to make a living and it needs constant hard work.  I'm really proud to see my side hustle turn into a professional wedding business that has worked at over 600 weddings in just over 12 years.
