Wedding Photography Posing Guide. Help with getting you comfortable on your wedding day.

For the majority of couples, this will be the first time in front of a professional camera. I've put together a range of images to help you practise the simple poses that we have in our tool kit to make you feel confident and comfortable on the day. If I can help you feel relaxed on the day then I feel like I've achieved my ultimate goal as a wedding photographer. Give them a try at home so that it feels natural on the day. Even though this suggestion might feel weird, I promise you, the more practise you put in, the better the results will be with your wedding photos.

There's really only two parts on a wedding day that I will be putting you into places that feel like a pose. What I'm trying to create is a comfortable way to stand that actually looks more like a candid moment.

01. Getting Ready Photos

For the vast majority of this section, I won't be asking you to do anything other than what you need to do. Doing things in real time is always the best idea. Once you're almost ready though, I'll get you into the best light available and ask you to then put on your finer details such as jewellery and cuff links.

These two images show bodies almost away from the light whereas faces are turning towards the light.

02. Formal Photos

This part of the day is generally the most feared. There can be concerns of awkwardness or feeling uncomfortable having photos taken in front of your bridal party. These can all be taken care of easily enough. I have a few simple tricks up my sleeve as well as an easy way to communicate how to achieve each one.

How to stand

Pay close attention to everyone's legs in these images. For men, I explain this as the pub stance. Imagine how you stand at the pub, leaning on one leg for balance holding a drink. Now instead of holding a drink, put that hand in your pocket. Put your weight on one leg and figure out which leg feels the most comfortable.

For women,  I always suggest a slight turn, keeping an angle to the camera and turning your head straight on. Lean all of your weight onto the leg that is furthest away from the camera. Keep your front foot pointing at the camera. With your arms, try to keep your arms bent slightly and kept away from your body which helps to reduce the size of upper arms.
