Easily the most common thing I hear from the couples I work with is that they’re comfortable in front of a camera. And this is precisely where I have found my niche as a wedding photographer. I attract couples that don’t feel comfortable in photos because I don’t either.
Years ago, I had that realisation and so I went off and tried to study how to help couples through this part of their day. I looked at what triggers me in photos and worked on those aspects. Identifying the part where couples feel the most pressure is easily the formal portraits.
When we break down a wedding day, the majority is spent shooting candid photos where you do your thing and I’ll capture what’s happening. There’s very minimal direction from me through the getting ready part. Definitely no direction through the ceremony. A little bit through family photos and so at the point of getting portraits, this is where I need to help the most.
My approach is pretty straightforward. I’ll help you get into positions where you’re feeling comfortable and I allow enough time for that to happen. I’ll ask you to breathe and check yourselves to make sure you are comfortable and not just saying yes to hurry things along. I’ll then give you some things to do with your hands as well as some actions to help create motion and avoid feeling rigid and that’s it, we’re ready to take some photos. From there, I’ll back away, let you follow my suggestions while I slowly move around quietly taking photos. The more I can create a comfortable environment for you, the better the results.
Emily & Peta fit the above perfectly. They’re not overly keen on being the centre of attention and so with the experience I have working this way, we were able to create some images that they were really happy with.
“Hi Matt,
Thank you so much for being our photographer for our wedding. We cannot thank you enough for your flexibility, guidance, and support, especially during Covid.
From the get-go, you got the vibe that Pete and I were wanting to achieve and you made us feel calm and listened to throughout the entire process. And the ceremony/reception was a reflection of this. We could not have asked for anything more and in our eyes was completely perfect. Thank you for also coordinating with Steve the DJ and for making everything flow and work on the night. It made it so easy for Pete and I to not have to make any decisions or think about anything, and we got to just have an absolute ball and a wonderful night. So thank you for being absolutely perfect at your job. We are so excited with the photos!!!
Kind regards,
Emily and Petar”
