Last year as the pandemic was hitting and the word lockdown was brand new, an email came through with a mad panic tone to it. It was Lucy from Baxter Barn asking me if I was free in three days time to shoot a wedding for a couple who had to move their date forward to avoid the looming lockdown!
I checked my calendar, I had the date free and so I said yes. The hardest part about something like this is that the couple and I don’t know each other and we haven’t had time to build rapport in the usual year-long lead up to a wedding.
Building relationships with couples plays a massive part and achieving great photos because the more they can relax with me, the more they’ll relax in front of a camera which will come through in their photos.
So, the race was on. How do you build rapport with strangers super quickly. First, get on the phone and talk to them. I think I asked about footy teams, what they do for work, what’s important to them and what their hobbies were. I also got the lay of the land with their families and if there were any tensions that I needed to be aware of.
Armed with my basic knowledge of Monne and Curtis, I took off and photographed their wedding. It was also my first time working at the Little Vineyard too so it was like a little adventure to somewhere new. Their families greeted me with open arms and it was a treat to shoot this wedding. The world was going bonkers around us however it felt like this day was in a cocoon. It was a privilege.
